Sandalwood is a tall tree that can grow up to three meters tall. The sandalwood from Mysore, India, is considered the most premium. It has a yellowish-gray bark, and the core wood has a mild and sweet aroma, while the leaves and bark do not have much. The scent differs depending on the place of origin; those from Indonesia and Australia have a mild but slightly sour aroma. Sandalwood is often used as a base note in perfumes, and in Japan, it is also known for being used in the framework of Japanese folding fans ("sensu").
